Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which a patient has trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. The condition can be short-term (acute) or can be long term (chronic). It may also come and go depending on person to person. Acute insomnia is a state that lasts from 1 night to a few weeks. Insomnia is said to be chronic when sleeplessness occurs at least 3 nights a week for 3 months or more.
There are basically two types of insomnia: primary and secondary.
Primary insomnia: This means that a patient's sleep problems aren’t linked to any other health condition or problem.
Secondary insomnia: This means that the patient is having trouble sleeping because of different health conditions like asthma, depression, arthritis, cancer, or heartburn, pain, medication.
