Guggul is a fragrant or pleasant smelling resin produced by the Mukul myrrh tree (Commiphora mukul) that is found in India, Central Asia, and North Africa. Guggul has been used for thousands of years in the traditional medicine of India that is nothing but ayurveda. It has been used to treat a variety of medical conditions like arthritis, acne, hemorrhoids and urinary tract infections. Guggul is also referred to as a weight loss agent. Guggul resin is extracted from the tree. Harvesting begins as early as November and continues until late July. The collected resin is then hand picked to remove adulteration and is allowed to dry. After it has been checked for purity, guggul can be used to make medicinal extracts, powders, and topical salves. Because of its bitter taste, guggul is generally used to make tea.
