Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic joint condition and it lasts long. A joint is where two bones come together and are held together. The ends of these bones are covered with protective tissue known as cartilage. When a person is suffering from osteoarthritis, this cartilage breaks down, and it causes the bones within the joint to rub together. This rubbing of the bones causes pain, stiffness, and other symptoms.

Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease, degenerative arthritis, and wear-and-tear arthritis.
