Fatty liver disease is also known as hepatic steatosis. It happens when the fat builds up in the liver. Having small amounts of fat in your liver is normal, but too much of it can become a health problem. The liver is the second largest organ of the body. Too much fat in the liver can cause liver inflammation, which can damage the liver and create scarring. In severe cases, this scarring even can lead to liver failure.
